Program Title:
How to Implement a Lean Culture within an Organization
Speaker:
Dick Bayer, Lean Construction Institute
(See Bio Below)
Abstract:
Careful what you wish for - successful project use of lean tools invariably leads to hunger within the organization for structural and cultural change. Sutter's Five Big Ideas have been part of the foundation of LCI since 2004. How do we take those ideas - collaborate, really collaborate, optimize the whole, tightly couple learning with action, increase relatedness and projects as a network of commitments - into our companies, programs and projects? Dick Bayer will talk about using those Five Ideas as keystones for cultural change. Join us on the 26th.
Speaker Bio:
Dick Bayer has been the Interim Executive Director of the Lean Construction Institute since July 2010, and a Board Member of LCI since 2009. He and his partner, Dan Fauchier, were the chief facilitators for the California Prison Healthcare project in Sacramento from April 2008 through October 2009 and learned, facilitated, and taught lean principles on that project. He has consulted on over 25 lean or IPD projects throughout the country, worked with numerous construction and design firms on lean strategy, and still consults in lean on a part-time basis through the ReAlignment Group of which he is the President.
He has dedicated his career to solving difficult and intractable problems and delivering claims free projects. He is a licensed attorney, having practiced construction law in Colorado, California and Idaho for the past 35 years. He has been an AAA arbitrator since the mid-1980's and a credentialed mediator since 1996. He has mediated over 300 construction, business, land-use, environmental and other cases in the last 12 years. He is a member of the neutral panel for the United States Institute for Environmental Conflict Resolution. He was selected as the "Professional of the Year: Environmental Law," by Strathmore's Who's Who in 2005. He is a former member of the California Academy of Distinguished neutrals and several other well-known panels. He has served on the boards of the Lean Construction Institute, the National Conflict Resolution Center (formerly the San Diego Mediation Center), the California Independent Petroleum Association, ADR-San Diego and the California Dispute Resolution Council (CDRC), the non-profit advocate for all ADR providers in California. He was President of the CDRC in 2005. From 1992 through 2004 he taught Environmental Law at the University of San Diego graduate careers program. With Dan Fauchier, he wrote the Partnering Chapter for the recently released Megaprojects: Challenges and Recommended Practices (ACEC, Washington, D.C. 2010). He is the principle author of the Program Delivery Guide for the California Prison Health Care Receivership and recently rewrote the partnering manual for the Department of Transportation of the State of Ohio. He has written extensively on lean construction, partnering and dispute resolution and is a frequent lecturer on those topics.

The Lean Construction Institute (LCI), a non-profit research organization, was founded in August 1997. LCI's purpose is to develop and disseminate new knowledge regarding the management of work in design, engineering and construction for capital facilities. LCI has developed the Lean Project Delivery System© (LPDS), and the Last Planner® System of production control. Lean Construction is a production management-based approach to project delivery - a new way to design and build capital facilities. Lean production management has caused a revolution in manufacturing design, supply and assembly. Applied to construction, Lean changes the way work is done throughout the delivery process. Lean Construction extends from the objectives of a lean production system - maximize value and minimize waste - to specific techniques and applies them in a new project delivery process extending from project definition through design, supply and assembly.
